Chain Maintenance

Chains are very important when it comes to the operation of a forklift mast. When picking up your load, the chains use hydraulic pressure and many times have to rotate while applying force to lift your load, which cause normal wear and tear. Because of this, regular inspection is highly suggested at the start of every shift, but what warning signs should you look for to let you know that it's time for a chain change? Be sure to look for these signs:

  • Wear or Elongation: Measure your chains with a wear gauge or a similar product. If the chains have elongated more than three percent, it's time to replace them.
  • Broken Links: Too much force on the chains or working on rough surfaces can cause links in the chains to break. Try to replace a broken link as soon as you can.
  • Turned Pins: Many times, poor lubrication of the chains will cause pins in the chains to turn. If you see one turned pin, make sure to check for more!

If you notice any of these warning signs, replace the necessary parts as soon as possible. Remember that TVH is your One-Stop-Shop for all your chain needs!
