REDUCING CARBON FOOTPRINT

Our carbon footprint represents the total direct and indirect greenhouse gas emissions (GHGs), especially carbon dioxide (CO₂), released into the atmosphere as a result of our activities. In our efforts for more sustainable practices, we consulted multiple stakeholders to identify our largest environmental impacts. Greenhouse gas emissions emerged as the top issue.

As a response to this result, we seek to reduce our emissions and contribute actively to a more circular economy. GHG emissions are categorized into three scopes:

  • Scope 1: Direct emissions from TVH’s owned or controlled sources. This includes emissions from fuel combustion engines and on-site energy generation.
     
  • Scope 2: Indirect emissions associated with the purchase of electricity, steam, heat, and cooling used by TVH. These emissions occur at the facility where the energy is produced.
     
  • Scope 3: All other indirect emissions within the value chain. This includes emissions from the supply chain, employee commuting, product use, waste disposal, and more.

TVH’s Environmental Charter outlines the principles and practices necessary to achieve our environmental targets. Our main goal is to reduce emissions in Scope 1 and Scope 2 by 57% by 2030. 

In recent years, natural gas consumption and company vehicles made up 45% of our direct (Scope 1) emissions, while purchased energy (mainly electricity within Scope 2) accounted for 55%. Scope 3 emissions, which are the largest part of our GHGs, are harder to reduce as they span the entire value chain. To tackle this, we're improving measurements and working with our partners to address this, taking direct action where possible, such as in business travel and transport. 

Renewable energy and energy efficiency

Reducing our carbon footprint is part of TVH’s strategic building blocks. We aim to actively contribute to the global effort to limit global warming to 1.5°C. One way of doing this is by producing our own renewable energy.

In 2023, our solar PV cells could produce up to 5.5 megawatts. We want to increase this capacity to 11 megawatts peak by 2030. What we can’t generate ourselves to cover our needs, we buy from the grid. 

By 2026, we will have switched 95% of our purchased electricity to renewable sources. In line with these changes, we’re also electrifying TVH’s company vehicle fleet.

Gradually, we are also improving our older installations and enhancing the energy efficiency of our buildings. 

Remanufacturing

We firmly believe in the circular economy and are convinced that waste should be avoided at all costs. Following the cradle-to-cradle concept, we keep our remanufactured parts out of landfills, prevent the need to produce new parts and reduce the consumption of even more raw materials. If a part cannot be remanufactured, we recycle it correctly so that its resources can be reused. 

TVH remanufactures

TVH remanufactures over 100,000 parts each year. That’s one of the many ways we contribute to a cleaner planet and support the circular economy. 

What once started as a small business segment is now one of TVH’s fastest-growing departments. Unlike a standard repair, remanufacturing involves fully disassembling the part, replacing worn and damaged components and restoring it to like-new condition.

TVH has been buying used parts and remanufacturing them for nearly 30 years. Nowadays, more than 250 expert technicians and engineers work for TVH’s global remanufacturing operations. A business we only expect to grow.
