Things you should know before using a battery charger

Before plugging in a new Energic Plus battery charger, it’s essential to check several key aspects of the charger and battery. Incorrect handling could result in charger failure, after all. Avoid potentially costly mishaps and read this blog to find out exactly what you need to pay attention to.

Check the input voltage

Before using a battery charger for the first time, it’s crucial to check the input voltage. This is especially important for conventional chargers, since high-frequency chargers will adjust automatically. Failure to check the input voltage of a conventional charger can result in damage to some of its internal components, such as the contactor, which can be caused by excessive voltage.

To check the input voltage, measure the voltage on the socket with a multimeter, then set the charger accordingly to ensure it is connected correctly. For example, if the input voltage is 230 V, set the charger accordingly and connect it to a 230 V supply.

Check the battery

Always check the battery voltage before starting the charging process. If the machine has been left unused for a long time and the battery has discharged too deeply, the voltage may be too low for some chargers to start up. The required start-up voltage depends on the charger’s brand and type.

Check what battery type the charger is set to

Most high-frequency chargers can’t automatically recognise the type of battery they are charging, whether it is lead-acid, gel or AGM. However, if the charger is set incorrectly, it could damage the battery. This is why a high-frequency charger must be set to the correct battery type before the charging process begins. Refer to the charger’s manual for instructions on how to do this.

Note that this only applies to high-frequency or multi-voltage chargers. Conventional chargers are solely designed for lead-acid batteries and therefore do not have this problem.
