How to choose between a built-in and stand-alone charger

18 July 2025

A traction battery charger plays a crucial role in maximising the lifespan of a machine’s battery. To ensure the charging process runs smoothly, it is important to select the correct traction battery charger. The main choice is between a built-in charger and a stand-alone charger, both of which are available from our Energic Plus brand. The most suitable option depends on various factors, including the type of machine, the working conditions, and the available space for the charger.

Type of machine

Type of machine

In most cases, the batteries of forklifts and warehouse equipment are charged using a stand-alone traction battery charger. To use this type of charger, a designated charging area is required, and the charger should ideally be placed on a platform or mounted on the wall. When the operator receives a signal that the battery needs charging, they can simply drive to the charging station.

However, stand-alone traction batteries are impractical for equipment such as mobile elevating work platforms (MEWPs), small earth-movers, telehandlers, scrubbers, sweepers and golf carts. As these machines are often used outdoors and are constantly on the move, a built-in charger is the preferred option due to its flexibility. Not only does a built-in charger ensure that the charger is always at hand, but it also allows the battery to be charged at any time. As a result, a designated charging station is not required, and in most cases, it’s sufficient simply to plug the charger into a socket to start charging.

Equipment that is used outdoors regularly comes into contact with water and dirt. Built-in chargers are therefore a better choice for these machines, as they are more resistant to dust and liquids and therefore have a higher ingress protection (IP) rating. Indoors, however, equipment is less exposed to environmental factors, meaning the battery doesn’t require such a high IP rating, and a stand-alone battery is sufficient.

Available space for the charger

Some machines lack the space for a traction battery charger, so having a compact built-in charger is extremely convenient. Since the charger is built in, the machine’s battery can be charged virtually anywhere, eliminating the need to return to a fixed charging station.
