TWO ESSENTIAL TIPS FOR BUYING SKID STEER LOADER TYRES

05 December 2023

Choosing the right tyres for your skid steer loader is like choosing the right shoes for your feet. When you're prepping for that mountain hike in the summer, no doubt you'll choose fitting and appropriate footwear to conquer the rocky terrain. The same applies when choosing tyres.
When productivity is at stake, your construction equipment needs tyres that match the challenges ahead. And to choose the exact tyres you need, there are only two things you need to know.

1. KNOW YOUR TERRAIN

Mud, rocks, building sites - your tyres face some challenging conditions. For maximum grip and performance, choosing the right tyre tread is essential.

  1. Tyre treads with lugs are suitable for rugged terrain with deep mud, rocks or stones. They're commonly known as "tractor tyres" and are a smart choice for skid steer loaders. The depth of the lugs and the distance between them can vary, and your choice depends on the complexity of the terrain.
  2. If your work environment is varied and unpredictable, you require tyres that are versatile enough to handle both complex and less challenging surfaces. Tyres with both lug and block patterns combine the best of both worlds and offer a solution to changing work environments.
  3. For light industrial conditions, tyres with a block tread are the best option. Their optimal surface contact adds comfort, grip and fuel efficiency.
  4. Turf tyres are specifically designed to leave no markings on the ground when working in landscaped areas like parks, gardens or golf courses. Their closed tread pattern is specifically designed for minimising ground disturbance and distributing the load evenly.
  5. Slick tyres have little or no tread and are often used in roadwork situations.

2. KNOW YOUR SIZE

To determine the correct size of your tyres, consult the equipment's manual for recommended sizes.
Alternatively, you can also examine the size markings on the sidewall of the current tyres.

If this is not available, the best way forward is to measure the tyre's diameter, width and rim diameter and get in touch with one of our advisors. Our dedicated technical support team will be able to help you in no time.

DISCOVER OUR RANGE

TVH has a wide range of tyres for any job and any size.

  • Pneumatic tyres are shock-absorbing and offer the most comfortable driving experience. Cords inside the rubber, usually made of nylon or steel, provide structural support and protection from cuts and punctures.
    • Bias tyres have multiple layers of cords inside them, fitted in a crisscross pattern. These cords span from side to side and reinforce the flanks, reducing the risk of cuts and punctures. Bias tyres are durable and a great choice when operating heavy loads at lower speeds.
    • Radial tyres have just one layer of protective cords running in parallel. This makes them more flexible, lightweight and the best choice for vehicles operating at higher speeds.
  • If you're dealing with persistent punctures, you might consider switching to solid or foam-filled tyres. TVH's in-house and fully automated tyre-filling facility delivers foam-filled tyres of the highest quality. They reduce the risk of punctures to zero and add ballast to your tyres, improving grip and traction.
