A radiator cap is one of the smallest components of your engine's cooling system, but nevertheless an important one. It helps to control the pressure of the coolant in the radiator, that is why it is also called a radiator pressure cap. How does it work? First of all, it keeps the pressure constant: this ensures that the coolant will not evaporate when it gets hotter. When the liquid expands because of its increased temperature, the radiator cap allows the coolant to escape to the expansion tank. In this way, the proper amount of coolant is kept in the radiator. And finally, when the coolant goes back to the radiator, it ensures no air gets into the system. If air would flow back to the radiator, cooling of the engine would be done poorly and this air could cause corrosion on the engine components.
- Keep the pressure inside the radiator constant at all times.
- This prevents overheating of the engine.
