Pistons, cylinder sleeves and accessories for forklifts

Your guide to pistons and cylinder sleeves

Pistons are the beating heart of an engine’s combustion system. Installed in cylinders at the core of the engine, they must be able to withstand explosive forces that blast temperatures as high as 1,000°C. During combustion, gas forces generated within the cylinder push the piston. As the pistons move, they rotate the crankshaft. This creates torque that feeds the flywheel and ultimately moves your machine.

The piston does its work inside the cylinder. It is made gas-tight by piston rings. Most common engines have four cylinders, however the number of cylinders varies from one to twelve depending on the engine. Cylinder sleeves serve as the inner wall of the cylinder and are typically made of more durable metal than the engine block itself. Cylinder sleeves have an excellent sliding surface to support the continuous up and down movement of the piston.

These hard-working engine parts incur wear and tear over time. When it comes to increasing the lifespan of your pistons and other engine parts, high-quality cylinder sleeves are a must. They also mean you use less lubricant, so you save time and money on maintenance.

What could go wrong with your pistons?

Pistons work incredibly hard. It’s important to make sure there’s no damage interfering with their performance. Damage can occur to the piston ring, piston skirt and the cylinder sleeve. The most common causes are:

  • not enough cooling;
  • not enough lubrication of the cylinder sleeve;
  • damage caused by thermal fatigue;
  • damage caused by an incorrect combustion process;
  • mechanical damage caused by the movement of the piston and valve.

Wear and tear is always an issue when it comes to moving parts. It’s also important to keep your cylinder sleeve well-oiled and perform maintenance on schedule. Good quality parts and regular maintenance help you get a longer lifetime out of your pistons and surrounding parts.

Tips for avoiding damage:

  • Change your oil frequently and clean the oil channels in the engine block, crankshaft and cylinder head;
  • Check for leaks in the intake system and/or injection nozzles;
  • Only use fuel with the specified octane rating;
  • Make sure the injection system, carburettor and ignition are set correctly;
  • Set the timing between the valve and piston accurately;
  • Use the right spark plugs;
  • Make sure you have the right-sized gaskets with proper thickness — and ensure they are not damaged.

When following the tips above, always perform tasks in accordance with the engine manufacturer’s guidelines.

Quality engine parts approved by our strict quality control department

Our quality control department makes sure we only include quality engine parts in our range. They have strict standards:

  1. Sourcing and rating suppliers: Our new and existing suppliers are constantly assessed on product quality, the packaging of the goods and their overall reliability.
  2. Sample testing: All samples received from our suppliers are subjected to in-depth testing by our quality control department.
  3. Checks and storage: Incoming parts are measured and tested, based on the information stored in the system in technical sheets, technical drawings, sample testing reports and spec sheets for the specific part. If a part is approved, it is given an internal code and label, individually packed and then stored in our warehouse where conditions such as humidity and temperature are constantly monitored.
