REDUCING CARBON FOOTPRINT

To maximise our sustainability efforts, we needed to determine the areas where we can have the greatest environmental impact. The conclusion? GHG emissions are a top priority.

Our carbon footprint measures the total greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions—primarily carbon dioxide (CO₂)—released into the atmosphere by our activities. 

GHG emissions are categorised into three scopes:

REDUCING CARBON FOOTPRINT

  • Scope 1: Direct emissions from sources we own or control, such as the natural gas used for heating our facilities, and the fuel used by our company cars.

  • Scope 2: Indirect emissions resulting from the energy we buy, such as electricity, steam, and heat.

  • Scope 3: All other indirect emissions that occur upstream and downstream our value chain, including those from purchased goods and services, transport of goods, business travel and end of life of sold products.

TVH’s Environmental Charter outlines the principles and practices necessary to achieve our environmental targets. Our main goal is to reduce emissions in Scope 1 and Scope 2 by 57% by 2030 (market-based compared to our 2023 baseline). 

To achieve this target, TVH is implementing several strategies:

  • Gradual improvement of older installations, improving the energy efficiency of existing buildings;
  • Incorporating energy-efficient features in new facilities;
  • Reaching 11 MWp of installed solar capacity by 2028 (from ~6 MWp in 2023);
  • Switching to 95% green purchased electricity by 2026;
  • Integrating the cost of green electricity as a baseline for all investment decisions, and allocating the cost of obtaining energy attribute certificates (GOs, RECs, iRECs, etc.) to the relevant operational cost centre;
  • Electrifying the fleet of company cars.

Recent results show we are well on track.



The market-based accounting of TVH's Scope 1 and 2 emissions reveals that in 2024, the primary contributor to direct emissions (Scope 1) was the use of natural gas for heating, followed by emissions from company cars. TVH's Scope 2 emissions were primarily driven by electricity consumption. Combined Scope 1 and 2 emissions represented about 3% of TVH’s total carbon inventory in 2024. 

The largest driver of the overall year-on-year emissions decline was a substantial reduction in Scope 2 emissions, which fell by over 13% as we started implementing our renewable procurement strategy. Scope 1 also declined as we started shifting our company cars from thermal to EVs or hybrid technology.

While we have made significant efforts to reduce our direct and more controllable indirect emissions, other indirect (Scope 3) emissions still account for over 97% of TVH's total emissions. Scope 3 emissions are the most challenging to mitigate, as they encompass our entire value chain. TVH’s value chain starts upstream with the procurement of parts. The production of parts is done primarily through upstream suppliers. The distribution of parts TVH relies on third-party freight forwarding companies. Therefore, we focus our strategy on collaborating closely with our partners, particularly those in transport and logistics, to achieve joint reductions in these emissions.

Another way to reduce emissions is to prevent them from occurring in the first place. That’s where our experienced remanufacturing division comes into play, driven by over 200 technical experts and engineers globally. By restoring and reusing parts, we ensure valuable resources remain in circulation and keep machines running. This operation is crucial to the circular economy, extending asset life-cycles, minimising incremental waste, and reducing the environmental footprint for both TVH and its clients. 

Renewable Energy


Reducing our carbon footprint is part of TVH’s strategic building blocks. We aim to actively contribute to the global effort to limit global warming to 1.5°C. One way of doing this is by producing our own renewable energy.

In 2023, our solar PV cells could produce up to 5.5 megawatts. We want to increase this capacity to 11 megawatts peak by 2030. What we can’t generate ourselves to cover our needs, we buy from the grid. 

By 2026, we will have switched 95% of our purchased electricity to renewable sources. In line with these changes, we’re also electrifying TVH’s company vehicle fleet.

Gradually, we are also improving our older installations and enhancing the energy efficiency of our buildings. 

Remanufacturing

We firmly believe in the circular economy and are convinced that waste should be avoided at all costs. Following the cradle-to-cradle concept, we keep our remanufactured parts out of landfills, prevent the need to produce new parts and reduce the consumption of even more raw materials. If a part cannot be remanufactured, we recycle it correctly so that its resources can be reused. 

TVH remanufactures

TVH remanufactures over 100,000 parts each year. That’s one of the many ways we contribute to a cleaner planet and support the circular economy. 

What once started as a small business segment is now one of TVH’s fastest-growing departments. Unlike a standard repair, remanufacturing involves fully disassembling the part, replacing worn and damaged components and restoring it to like-new condition.

TVH has been buying used parts and remanufacturing them for nearly 30 years. Nowadays, more than 250 expert technicians and engineers work for TVH’s global remanufacturing operations. A business we only expect to grow.
