The functions of different timing parts
Timing chains and timing belts
A timing belt is a belt with teeth, whereas a timing chain is a chain with several links. A timing belt or timing chain is used to connect the most important parts of your engine, such as the camshaft and the crankshaft. This enables synchronised movements of the engine’s valves and pistons.
Chain tensioners and belt tensioners
Chain tensioners and belt tensioners are used to put tension onto the belt or chain. They tighten the belt in such a way that it can’t get loose from the gears or idler pulleys. Chain and belt tensioners are available in hydraulic and mechanical versions.
Idlers, deflection pulleys or rollers
Idlers are often used to guide the belt onto a certain path, in situations where a direct path would be impractical. They also increase the wrap angle of the belt and by doing so, increase the force-transfer capacity.
Timing gears
These are gears that the timing belt or timing chain run over. They’re equipped with teeth that fit perfectly with the profile of the belt or chain.
