About Leroy-Somer
Leroy-Somer is a global specialist in electromechanical and electronic drive systems, as well as industrial alternators.
The brand was founded in the French city of Angoulême in 1919. Founder Marcellin Leroy realised the importance of the electric motor as a catalyst for modernising society. Remarkably from the start, the company embodied an integrated process, leading to the founding of its foundry in 1928.
In 1947, Moteurs Leroy started manufacturing alternators with the well-known N motor. Marcellin Leroy handed over control of the company to George Chavanes in 1958, who streamlined the production to meet the current challenges. Under his leadership, the company became a European leader in its field.
In 1990, Emerson took over Leroy-Somer, who bought all of the company shares. This way, Leroy-Somer conquered new markets and expanded its international presence. In 2017, Nidec saw the potential of the innovative brand and took over the company shares. Nidec has been the sole shareholder to this day.
Today, Leroy-Somer is part of the Nidec-group employs over 10,000 people worldwide in an international network of 470 production and service sites, including in Europe, Mexico, India and China.
