Engine valves and related parts for forklifts

What is an engine valve?

Engine valves are devices that regulate, direct and control the flow of fuel and air in the engine. They open or close passageways at precisely timed intervals — and this mechanical dance enables the engine to run efficiently.

Engines need a minimum of two valves per cylinder: an intake valve and an exhaust valve. But many hands make light work. That’s why most engines today are multi-valve — they contain four to six valves per cylinder. This allows everything to flow more efficiently and power the engine more effectively.

Each valve has two parts: a stem and a head. The stem is usually made of hardened steel. The head is made from a strong material that can resist the enormous amount of heat created in the combustion chamber — most commonly titanium or carbon steel.

The different types of engine valves

TVH has all the engine valves you need: intake valves and exhaust valves.

Intake valves control how much fuel-air mixture enters an engine’s cylinder. And exhaust valves free exhaust gases from the combustion chamber.

Both valves have a similar design, but intake valves are bigger than exhaust valves. This creates a wider pathway for gases to flow into the cylinder. Why? Because drawing gas in is a much harder task than releasing exhaust gas.

Exhaust valves are made from tougher material. This is so they can handle the enormous amount of heat that leaves the combustion chamber. Some exhaust valves are also treated with a thin coating, such as Stellite, to increase durability and heat resistance.

TVH has all the engine parts you need, including the parts that work with engine valves such as valve springs, valve tappets, valve guides, valve locks, valve retainers, valve seats, valve sealings, and more.

Things you should know about valves

There are two main ways that valves fail:

  • A burned valve. This is caused by the exhaust gases eating away at the valve. Small cracks and holes appear in the valve, weakening the seal between the face of the valve and the valve seat. What happens next? Compression is lost inside the cylinder. You lose engine power. And your engine parts are subjected to faster wear and tear.
  • A bent valve. This issue occurs in interference engines where the valve and piston move in the same space. If the timing of the mechanism is even slightly off, the valve and piston may crash into each other, causing a bent valve. Using a non-interference engine? Then you don’t have to worry because the valve and piston don’t share the same space in your engine.

Each valve is unique. So make sure you also order the matching valve seats, valve locks, and any other parts you need. Always follow the installation procedures specific to your engine — it’s a great way to avoid engine failure down the track. And once you’ve installed your new valves, remember to manually perform one engine cycle. This gives you a chance to notice any malfunctioning parts and ensure your engine is ready for work again.

Quality engine parts approved by our strict quality control department

Our quality control department makes sure we only include quality engine parts in our range. They have strict standards:

  1. Sourcing and rating suppliers: Our new and existing suppliers are constantly assessed on product quality, the packaging of the goods and their overall reliability.
  2. Sample testing: All samples received from our suppliers are subjected to in-depth testing by our quality control department.
  3. Checks and storage: Incoming parts are measured and tested, based on the information stored in the system in technical sheets, technical drawings, sample testing reports and spec sheets for the specific part. If a part is approved, it is given an internal code and label, individually packed and then stored in our warehouse where conditions such as humidity and temperature are constantly monitored.
