What are Leaf Chains?

Leaf chains are a heavy-duty chain commonly used in machinery requiring efficient lifting or pulling capabilities. They are also used as counterweight chains for forklift masts or other similar applications. It’s strong and resilient  to abrupt load changes. In industrial sectors, it finds application within forklift trucks, scissor lifts, and other material handling equipment. They are capable of  managing substantial loads under challenging conditions in agriculture and construction machinery applications.

Additionally, leaf chains are used in environments where minimal stretching is crucial. They are designed to have low elongation characteristics, ensuring consistent performance over extended periods of use. The design of leaf chains allows for efficient power transmission and smooth operation, making them an essential component in many industrial and heavy-duty applications.

When Should Leaf Chains Be Replaced?

Regular inspection and timely replacement of leaf chains are essential for ensuring the smooth and safe operation of heavy-duty machinery. Some signs of leaf chain wear, such as turned pins, rust or damage to the chain's components are easily recognisable and indicate an urgent need for replacement.

Leaf Chain Elongation

Some damage is less noticeable which means the leaf chain needs to be routinely measured to ensure that it does not exceed the maximum allowed percentage of elongation.

A leaf chain is considered to have worn beyond its safe service life when the nominal pitch length has been extended by between 2% and 3%. Elongation beyond 2% indicates compromised dynamic life and reduced ultimate breaking strength, requiring immediate replacement or a defined time limit for renewal to ensure operational safety.

Operational Factors

At the same time it is important to bear in mind that there can be an over-reliance on leaf chain elongation when conducting a leaf chain inspection. What is important is to take into account all the operational factors that can have an impact on leaf chain wear. The rate of leaf chain wear depends on various factors, including the chain's condition, load nature, operating surfaces, and environmental conditions. Additionally, maintenance quality, workload frequency, and operational capacity significantly influence the wear rate. To prolong the life of your chain you can follow our tips as detailed here.

Considering these factors during inspections is crucial for making informed decisions about when to replace leaf chains, ensuring the sustained efficiency and safety of machinery. At TVH we have the tools you need to keep your leaf chains in operating condition.
