Get Back on Track: Signs Your Undercarriage Needs Attention

Tracks are one of the hardest-working components on your compact track loaders and mini excavators. They carry the full weight of the machine, absorb constant impact, and operate in some of the most extreme conditions. Knowing when to replace them, and what to look for is the difference between routine maintenance and an unexpected breakdown while on the job.

How Long Do Tracks Last?

Track lifespan is highly variable and depends on a combination of factors, including the operator, the working environment, weather conditions, and how the equipment is stored. Because of this, replacement timelines should be used as guidelines rather than rules. Regular inspection is the most reliable way to stay ahead of track failure.

Signs Your Tracks Need Replaced

• Worn Sprocket: A worn or pointy sprocket is one of the clearest indicators that track replacement is overdue. A damaged sprocket will accelerate wear on a new track if not replaced at the same time.
• Excessive Stretching: Over time, tracks stretch and lose their ability to maintain proper tension. This is checked by measuring the track's sag. If the track can no longer be tensioned correctly, it is time for a replacement.
• Visible Damage and Cracking: Surface cracks and physical damage are clear signs that the track’s integrity has been compromised and replacement should not be delayed. 
• Exposed Steel Cables: When internal steel cables become visible through the rubber, the track has reached the end of its serviceable life and must be replaced immediately.

Don’t Forget the Sprockets, Idlers, and Rollers

When installing a new track, the sprocket should be replaced at the same time. An old, worn sprocket will quickly damage a new track, and shorten the life span significantly.

Idlers, which maintain track tension, should always be inspected for damage caused by gravel or other debris. Bottom rollers travel directly on the track and are subject to significant wear, while mini excavators also feature top rollers that prevent the upper portion of the track from rubbing against the machine. Checking all of these components during a track replacement ensures the new track performs as expected and lasts as long as possible.
