Wellbeing Gardening – For the Body, Mind and Spirit

17 August 2016

Gardening gets you out in the fresh air and sunshine. It also provides an excellent way to get your blood moving through movement which includes stretching, squatting and strengthening exercises. Planting and maintaining a garden brings joy, physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually.

At TVH, we offer on-site community gardens and a Garden Club for employees.  The raised box plots provide employees the opportunity to get out of the office environment and detox from technology.  We started a “Green Thumb Challenge” which encourages planting gardens.  Employees share photos of their gardens and how having a garden impacts their life.

The benefits of gardening include an elevated sense of calm as well as:

  • Increased healthier eating habits of fruit and vegetables
  • Increased overall levels of physical activity and fitness
  • Reduced stress
  • Improved heart health
  • Enhanced hand strength and dexterity
  • Improved brain health
  • Improved social interaction

Gardening can be an enjoyable activity for the whole family and co-workers.  This may be the stress buster and workout of your dreams that also provides wholesome nutrition.
